This event was in collaboration with ambassadors from the Business of Creative Enterprises program.
The Challenge:
The primary challenge was to infuse a sense of environmental responsibility into the campus culture, especially during the school-wide sustainability week. My goal was to transform a routine social gathering into an impactful event that entertained and educated attendees on sustainable practices.
Ugly Baby Identified:
Our monthly social events lacked distinct themes, resulting in gatherings that felt routine and uninspiring.
Game Plan:
Leveraging the experience design principles, our goal was to transform these gatherings into themed, memorable experiences that students would love and remember, starting with a sustainability-focused event that aligned perfectly with the school-wide sustainability week.
Strategic Approach:
- Green Certification: Collaborated with the school’s sustainability office to ensure the event met all green event guidelines, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
- Sustainable Supplies: Opted for vegan food options from a local small business, compostable utensils, bamboo plates, and other eco-friendly materials.
- Educational Engagement: Integrated educational components like a screening of “Planet Earth” to raise awareness about environmental issues and used recycled paper sticky notes for attendees to make sustainability pledges. Students got to pick their choice of nature-themed sticker after making a pledge.
- Venue Atmosphere: We ensured that the event space, centered around our floor’s “big table,” fostered a welcoming environment for discussion, idea-sharing, and community bonding over shared values.
Victory Dance:
- Successful Execution: The event was well-received with attendees praising the thoughtfulness of the sustainable practices implemented.
- Enhanced Awareness: The combination of educational materials and sustainable practices helped increase ecological awareness among attendees.
- Community Impact: By aligning the event with the school-wide sustainability week, we maximized the impact and visibility of our efforts, fostering a stronger community commitment to environmental stewardship.
- Lasting Legacy: The event set a new standard for future campus events.
